Air pollution has become a major environmental issue with public health consequences, contributing to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases across Juba, Terekeka, and Magwi counties, and other cities and towns in South Sudan. The level of pollution and efficiency of interventions can only be determined by measurement, making this project critical in establishing pollution levels in South Sudan for the first time. Human Apeal Development Organization’s deployment of 20 Binos Air Quality Monitors for real-time data communication will be significant in our efforts to protect public health and the environment. Communities and individuals will be empowered to take proactive measures for their health and well-being, while trained HADO and government staff sustain the network long-term. Data generated will be shared through open platform and will be used for creating public awareness campaigns, research, and will inform the Ministry of Environment & Forestry’s development of South Sudan’s first national air quality standards, ultimately improving air quality, and public health nationwide.

The award will facilitate the installation of South Sudan’s first long-term air quality monitoring network across Juba, Terekeka, and Magwi counties in Central and Eastern Equatoria States. The South Sudan Clean Air Initiative seeks to measure outdoor air pollution (PM2.5 levels) using a network of 20 low-cost Binos Air Quality Monitors, with data made openly available to the public in real-time for a minimum period of 18 months. This evidence will provide the foundation for the National Ministry of Environment & Forestry to develop South Sudan’s first national air quality standards, driving lasting, evidence-based policy change.
