2025 Awardee

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA)

Led by Sarah Zalwango, KCCA’s air quality project aims to generate and provide open access to air pollution data to accelerate community-level clean air action by improving awareness among the community champions.

The award will support the installation of 40 air quality monitors. We will use the data generated to lobby and advocate for appropriation (by parliament of Uganda and city council) of more resources towards clean air action for Kampala City and all the eight cities in Uganda. Lastly, this project will contribute to the monitoring of implementation of national air quality standards recently launched by our national environment management authority.

“This project is so timely. It comes at a point when we are focusing on community oriented, community-led initiatives to improve the health of society. Therefore, increasing the coverage of monitors and access to the data by the community coupled with strengthening our community clean air champion program will ultimately result into improved air quality for the city residents.”
