National Environment Management Agency (ANGE)
The Greater Lomé is the capital of Togo. It concentrates 27% of the national population and more than 90% of economic activities while occupying 0.73% of the national land area. It represents the best area of interest for AQ monitoring for impact analysis and for setting up a model that could be scaled up in other cities. The project will deploy 15 air quality monitors and produce continuous PM2.5 data that will be shared openly to document air pollution evidence, support public decision-making and research, and serve different needs. Awareness-raising and policy-strengthening activities are planned based on the data with the aim of drafting decrees on air quality, taking into account monitoring, pollution prevention, and the polluter-pays principle, to be submitted to the Ministry of Environment for adoption. The ambition is to strengthen the ongoing Togo Air Quality Project (PQAT) and engage all key stakeholders to take action for cleaner air.
Our project will deploy a hybrid system composed of 12 low-cost sensors and 3 near-reference monitors in Greater Lomé, the capital of Togo. This first permanent air quality monitoring network in Togo will enhance the implementation of the Togo Air Quality Project (PQAT). PM2.5 data will be continuously produced and shared openly so that to document evidence of air pollution, support public decision making, research, and more. Moreover, the monitoring will serve to assess compliance with the national AQ standards. One of the key results will be the proposal of draft decrees covering AQ monitoring, pollution prevention and the polluter-pays principle, to be submitted to the Ministry of Environment for adoption.
