No community should be invisible simply because its air has never been measured. Yet across much of Uganda, people still lack the local information needed to understand the air they breathe and protect their health. The Uganda Clean Air Institutions Initiative (UCAII) will change this by placing real-time air-quality monitors at regional universities and international schools. These institutions will become trusted local hubs where students, researchers, and communities turn air-quality information into awareness, research, and action. The network will complement Uganda’s national monitoring efforts and help translate the National Environment (Air Quality Standards) Regulations, 2024, and Section 29 of the National Climate Change Act, 2021, from policy into practice through education and research. Ultimately, UCAII will nurture a new generation of clean-air champions, ensuring credible evidence reaches decision-makers and every community, not only Kampala, can demand and help shape a healthier future.

UCAII is about making clean air visible, actionable, and impossible to ignore. By anchoring real-time monitors across regional universities and international schools, we are building an institution-led sub-national network that will complement and strengthen Uganda’s national air-quality monitoring framework. But our ambition extends far beyond installing equipment. We are helping bring the National Environment (Air Quality Standards) Regulations, 2024, to life while advancing Section 29 of the National Climate Change Act, 2021, through hands-on education and research. We want to empower a new generation to transform credible data into public-health action, stronger accountability, and lasting change because clean air must become a shared national priority and a reality for every community, not a privilege determined by where one lives.
