2026 Awardee

This project will help Namibia strengthen public access to reliable air quality information by upgrading the existing monitoring station in Walvis Bay to measure fine particulate pollution, known as PM2.5. These tiny particles can affect heart and lung health, but they are not yet consistently measured with reference-grade equipment in many parts of the region. With support from the EPIC Air Quality Fund, Namibia will add improved monitoring capability at an existing station, support quality assurance, and make the resulting data openly available. The goal is to create a trusted source of local air quality information that can support public health awareness, policy decisions, and future environmental planning in Namibia. This work will also help demonstrate a practical model for expanding high-quality air monitoring in other priority locations.

The overall goal of the project is to strengthen Namibia’s ability to manage PM2.5 air pollution through reliable measurement, open data, and policy-relevant evidence. The project objective is to install, commission, operate, and openly publish data from a reference-grade PM2.5 monitor at the existing Walvis Bay station over 18 months, while using the resulting dataset to support government policy review and improved regional air quality oversight.
