Opensensor.space is an open platform for collecting and sharing air quality data worldwide. Starting in Greater Cairo, the project deploys outdoor sensors across the city’s fastest-growing neighborhoods. Each sensor streams near real-time measurements to our platform that anyone can access and reuse without restriction, following FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data principles. The project turns that evidence into action by producing policy briefs for government agencies, training journalists on environmental reporting, and working with universities to raise public awareness. We are confident that our contribution will support stronger air quality standards in Egypt and inspire similar efforts in other cities facing the same challenges. Transparency in air quality data helps communities participate in the decisions that shape their health and their future.

When air quality data is accessible, it transforms from numbers on a screen into a catalyst for systemic change. In Greater Cairo, over 22 million people live with pollution levels eight times above the WHO guideline, but most neighborhoods have no air quality data at all. Our team is collecting the evidence needed to drive stronger laws and better public health decisions in Egypt. The air quality monitoring network we build puts the same information in the hands of communities, institutions, and policymakers alike. Once everyone shares the same evidence, cleaner air becomes a public demand.
