Air pollution from traffic is a growing problem in Sri Lanka, especially along busy roads and transport corridors, but there has never been enough real, ongoing data to know how bad it is or where it is the worst. Our project will install air quality sensors along key transport routes to measure fine particle pollution (PM2.5) around the clock. This data will be made freely available to the public, researchers, and government authorities to help update outdated air quality rules and protect public health. We work in the climate change and sustainability space, building real-time data tools that help people make meaningful, informed decisions. This project is a natural extension of that work, and we bring hands-on experience turning raw environmental data into insights that communities and decision-makers can act on. We hope to show that low-cost, locally built sensor networks can deliver reliable results that others can replicate.
Sri Lanka’s transport corridors carry some of the country’s worst air quality, yet we’ve never had the open, continuous data needed to act on it. Through this project, our team hopes to deploy a nationwide PM2.5 monitoring network that gives government partners the evidence base to revise outdated vehicle emission standards. Beyond the hardware, we want to prove that open, publicly accessible air quality data can directly inform policy — turning Sri Lanka’s Clean Air 2025 mandate from an unfunded commitment into a measurable, evidence-driven reality.
